Somebody once asked me in amazement, “You mean, they pay you just to read??!” “Yep.

“TOO CUTE! began as two specials in 2011 before turning into an hourlong series in 2012. Each week, the series follows the lives of either kitten or puppy litters — with baby animals from other species thrown in occasionally — from their first weeks until they head off to their forever family…. And tying it all together is the grandfatherly voice-over of actor Henry Strozier, nominated this year for an Emmy for outstanding voice-over performance for the “Too Cute!” Christmas holiday installment… The show has averaged 900,000 viewers per episode.”

I learned a lot from directing audiobooks because I was able to crib technique from some great narrators,” among them George Guidall and Henry Strozier.

RECORDED BOOKS

“Narrator Henry Strozier has a rich, authoritative baritone, and his straightforward, no-nonsense delivery encapsulates the tough realities of this divisive war as he recounts the personal narratives of some of the American volunteers.”

Narrator Henry Strozier does a fine job bringing focus and balance to a difficult and uneven text. Diamond (Guns, Germs, and Steel; Collapse) is a bold and provocative historian... Speaking from experience about the countries he’s visited and the languages he speaks, he’s created a challenge for his narrator, who must deliver a social analysis in the voice of a personal travelogue. Strozier sounds exactly as you’d want Jared Diamond to sound, mellow in years, learned, and well traveled. His rich voice holds our ear...

Are some novels better suited for listening than for reading in print? Proulx’s 1996 novel provides evidence for the audio argument. Composed of eight parts and many character sketches, the book charts the consecutive owners of an accordion made in 1890s’ Sicily. In the U.S. these various immigrants contend with prejudice and violence and the compensating joy of music. Emphasizing breadth rather than depth, the novel and its detail-rich lyrical passages give reader Henry Strozier the opportunity to excel. His gravelly oratorical performance suits well the verbal music of this quirky, colorful book. The novel’s refusal to anchor on a single set of characters will limit its appeal, but Strozier’s reading captures its distinctive epic sprawl.
